The ability of C. jejuni strains to adhere to and invade Caco-2 cells. Cells were infected with C. jejuni NCTC 11168 and its derivatives for 2 h. A comparison of the levels of adherence is presented as the values of C. jejuni mutant and complemented strains relative to that of the wild-type strain, which was set at 100% (a). Gentamicin was added to another plate of cells and incubated for another 1 h to enumerate the invaded bacteria (b). The data are presented as the means ± standard deviation (SD) from three independent experiments. Significant differences (P < 0.05 *, and P < 0.01 **) are indicated by asterisks
