Transfer efficiency of multiple PAPI-1 copies into recipient strains. Marks [+] or [−] stand for strains with or without PAPI-1, respectively. After acquisition of PAPI-1, PAO1 becomes a stable donor which can transfer PAPI-1 to another recipient and decreases its ability of receiving additional copies of PAPI-1. Results are presented as mean ± SD for three independent experiments. Statistical significance was calculated by the unpaired t-test (** p < 0.01, and *** p < 0.001)
