Performance of detection of S. aureus by the qPCR assay. The standard curve showed a R2 of 0.99, a slope of − 3.16, and an amplification efficiency of 100.36%. The Cq values of serially diluted cell suspensions (5.0 × 107, 5.0 × 106, 5.0 × 105, 5.0 × 104, 5.0 × 103, 5.0 × 102, 5.0 × 101), indicating a LOD of 5.0 × 101 S. aureus cells with a Cq value of 37.36
